Jimmy Dugan is a washed-up ball player. He was one of the best. Home run
champ for six seasons, hit close to four hundred home runs in his career. But
his career was cut short by a drinking problem. He drank himself out of major
league baseball.
He is given one last chance by his former boss in baseball. He is named the
manager of the Rockford Peaches of the All American Girls Baseball League. At
first, he thinks and treats it like a joke, showing up drunk, tipping his little cap
to the fans and then sleeping in the dugout. But as he sees the girls playing
very well and taking the game seriously, he steps back up to the plate.
But is redemption isn’t complete until this conversation he has with Dottie on
the team bus after a game. He hits rock-bottom with the his confession “How
did I become so useless so fast.”
