Golf in the Kingdom: Hit 'Em Straight
Hit ‘em Straight
Jesus said that “the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” In
light of this passage, it’s not hard to see how the game of golf can be a great illustration to the truth that
getting to heaven is, in fact, not easy!

Getting to heaven doesn’t cost us anything because we receive eternal life as a free gift of God’s Grace.
Jesus Christ was born, lived the perfect life that God required of us (because we couldn’t live it), and was
killed in our place for our sins. He rose again from the dead on the third day and now lives forever. He calls
us to follow Him. He gives us faith in Him and the strength to live the challenges of being His disciple.

No, getting to heaven doesn’t cost us anything. But living the Christian life before we get to heaven is far
from easy!

To play well in the game of golf you have to hit the ball straight down a narrow fairway. Unfortunately for
me it is very easy for me to hit a hook or a slice and not land the ball in the narrow fairway (or a wide one
for that matter).

So it is with the Christian walk. It is too easy for us to live life as if there are no boundaries. Too many live
their lives doing what they please, not caring if they hurt anyone or themselves along the way. You’ve
probably met people like this. They often give an excuse for their sinful behavior along the lines of, “I’m not
hurting anyone. Don’t hassle me about it!” But they do hurt themselves, they hurt God, and more often
than not they hurt others but refuse to see that.

Jesus calls us to live our lives differently. We will never get to the goal of our Christian lives living “wide and
wild.” Jesus says that the way is narrow that leads to eternal life. Few will find it. No one will find it without
Jesus Christ living in his or her hearts.

A popular insurance company has a current TV ad that shows a golfer lining up a putt and as the camera
pulls away from the shot the hole is 20 feet wide! Not easy to miss a putt like that. But in the real world
one of the hardest things to do in sports is hit a one-inch ball into a four-inch hole from 10 yards or
further away.

Just so, it is impossible to enter eternal life on our terms. We have to follow the one who calls us. Jesus
Christ laid it out for us and His way is not only the best way, it is the only way!
