Exodus 17:8-16

Big Idea: The Victory Always Belongs to the Lord

A Leader like Joshua, with Strength and Courage

        Follow the example and teaching of Moses
        Fulfill the promise (especially of land)
        Trust in God's presence at all times
        Obedience to God
        Lead in battle
        Lead in worship
        Respond to God's call (summarizes all of the above)

Vs. 9 – Joshua chose the men
Even though Moses was the “servant of God” he relegates this authority to Joshua. This is the first time Joshua is
mentioned in Scripture but already he is a leader in Israel.

Vs. 10 – Joshua did as he was told
No conversation is recorded between Moses and Joshua. While this may be because it was not relevant to the
story, it would seem that with the injunction to “write this as a memorial” would include any conversation Moses
had with Joshua.
No, Joshua simply did was he was told. He had seen enough to trust implicitly Moses – and God’s – judgment.

Vs. 13 – Joshua overwhelmed, but only as Moses hands were held up. The victory belongs to the Lord (just as it
would at Jericho 40 years later).
Moses’ hands lifted up remind of a picture of prayer, of pleading with God. This would be the theme of
Israel’s – and our – life. We will only be victorious if we are in continuous contact with God.

Our “strength lay only in a continuous appeal to the Lord’s power and a continuous remembrance of what He
had already done for them, in other words, a continuous appeal in deed and work (thus also in prayer) to His
faithfulness.” (Bible Student’s Commentary: Exodus, translated from the Dutch by J. H. Kok & B.V. Kampen,
page 169).
