Purpose and Significance In Life
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
On the special Extended Version – Disc 2, chapter 33. Time: 23:10.
The scene is the Fellowship in the Mines of Moria. Gandalf and Frodo are having
a discussion before three doorways. The quote you’re looking for is:
Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to
decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.
There are other forces at work, Frodo, than the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to
find the ring. In which case you also were meant to have it, and that is an
encouraging thought.
In many fantasy stories, the idea of “meant to be” is prevalent. Whether it is in
the form of prophecy or fate or whatever, the idea that major things do not
“just happen” is a major plot point. This is a carry over, I believe, from the real
world.
Many things in this world don’t “just happen.” Things tend to happen for a
reason.
1. Have you ever felt that something happened because it was “meant to be”?
2. If not, what are some of the things that could be categorized as “meant to
be”?
Genesis 45:4-15
1. Have you identified a purpose for you life? Do you know why you are here?
2. Have you ever thought about what might happen if you hadn’t been born?
(Ala George Bailey’s gift of seeing the world that exists without him being in it
in It’s a Wonderful Life.)
God has a purpose for your life. God is the purpose of your life.
