| The School of Experience Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius Clip: Chapter 12 (51 minutes into movie) (length about 1:50) Bobby Jones has just lost another golf match. He has a discussion with his friend, O.B. about it. 1. “Good judgment comes from experience.” Do you agree? 2. “A lot of experience comes from bad judgment.” Do you agree? In the Bible, we have characters that have suffered through their bad judgment. Because of the way the Scriptures are set up, we don’t have records of how most of them learned from their experiences. But I think we can make some educated guesses and learn from them. These are just two examples of bad judgment on the part of the Children of Israel. Exodus 15:22-26 Exodus 32:15-20 1. What is at the core of their judgment? 2. Since Scripture doesn’t seem to record “Good judgment” from these experiences, what can we learn from them? David showed bad judgment on a couple of occasions. The most infamous being with Bathsheba. 2 Samuel 11 1. What is the core of this bad judgment of David? Because God showed great mercy on David by not killing him for his sin, but rather forgiving him this sin, David uses good judgment later on in his reign. 2 Samuel 19: 16-43 2. How did the experience of David’s bad judgment later give him good judgment? Jesus Christ never exhibited bad judgment. He was perfect. And He gives us that perfection as we come into relationship with Him. Because of Jesus Christ, our experiences resulting from bad judgment can lead us to good judgment. 1. Have you had “experiences” that have resulted from bad judgment? 2. What have you learned from them? 3. Have you been able to use good judgment based on the experiences you’ve had? |
